Dr Patrick Harkness: We have to remember that Scotland's investments do not have to be in Scotland. And we are proposing following independence to have a similar common research area framework within the UK. Hugh, would you like to respond to that? In my view, if Scotland leaves the UK, it leaves the UK institutions. It will have to have its own research system as well. I don't think the English taxpayers would continue to fund the system. But I'm troubled by this notion that somehow scientists are going to drop their pipettes and not do anything.
