How did these memory techniques change with the invention of writing? This is, I'm working on this a lot for a new book. The one culture in the world that you can trace right from the very early pictographs and scratchings and things, right through to a script that's used today. It's the only one because the other two independently developed the Phoenicians,. which end up Egyptians and hieroglyphs and the Maya - they're not using them still those scripts today. And as writing came, the dependence on memory palaces and the actual landscape became much less. Once you get a large community, you no longer got the elders in control with controlling all the knowledge.
