I think by trying to set a super ordinate goal it kind of forces you to interrogate kind of the initial subordinate goal you're trying to set for yourself. I'm glad that you brought up weight loss as the example because it's the perfect example of when failing to have a rich goal hierarchy sets you up for failure. The process of goal setting needs to be extremely reflective and extremely well thought out, so like you said it can't be as simple as just weight loss it's got to be weight loss for what and why or good luck writing a smart goal that covers all that right.
