Is the Pain in the Spinal Cord or Is It All in the Brain?
The spinal cord is a major processing part of the central nervous system. Local circuits filter out some of the information and in most cases reduce it so that the key element where is the pain how intense and how long does it last? This is the information we can pick up. However is also the site where pathological changes can occur and where the maladaptive pain arises at least in part in the spinal cord. The same way nociceptors can be sensitized by inflammation their threshold drops and they can now be activated by a nocice stimuli.
