The Protestant Reformation in Europe
The French offered to bor their ships at toulon, at the main french port on the mediterranean. Many french subjects were actually forced to vacate their homes and give quarter to these turks. The cathedral of toulon was even given over and made temporarily into a mosque for these turkish forces to worship in. So again, you could see this as a kind of a, now, early model of inter religious co existence. But there was no great idealism behind it. This was a strategic move in response to the incredible meteoric rise of the hapsburg dynasty.
