There's evidence that the persians used it, and the greeks might have got the idea from the persians. The word derives from a timpenon, which means a cudgel. It's a variation on what we think of as crucifixion,. meads being shackled to this board. So again, it's a form of prolonged, agonizing exposure that leads to death.
