The author reads from a story by Stuart Diebeck that she says influenced her writing. The couple are coming home on the L train in Chicago and kind of kissing on the train. A high school kid in shirt sleeves, maybe 16 with books tucked under one arm and a cigarette in his mouth cuts sight of them. "I thought how much I'd loved seeing someone like us streaming by," he writes.
