Mardonius' War With the Athenians at Salamis

Mardonius invaded Athens to inform Xerxes of his current success. The Persians made peace terms with the Athenian refugees at Salamis. But an Athenian named Lychitic stood up and publicly declared that the Athenian should accept this offer, and proposed to put it forth to be voted on in the Eclosia. When they found out what had happened, a large group also became so irate that they went to the home of Lychitic and stoned to death his wife and children. Herodotus alleges that Mardonius' motives for invading Athens were arrogance and a desire to tell Xerxes about his successes.
