How do we know what the decay rates are for differnt isotopes? We haven't been doing scientific measurements for six thousand years. But there are ways of figuring it out, including tests on objects with known ages. Scientists currently have predictions for elements that we're still trying to create. They're already predicting that there may be a so called island of stability coming up.
