Going on a pilgrimage became a common mode of of penance in the tenth eleventh centuries. People would walk hundreds of miles to some sort of sacred site, such as saint james' resting place at Santiago de Compostellella,. You might do a pilgrimage to places associated with saints, orr, places with healing powers like the baths at alurd in france. Or you might just go to some ocal place. And there came to be even something of a pilgrimage industry.
