The Jews in Ukrainian history are an example of culture which we have to spend at least a moment on. The Jews of Ukraine see over the course of the 19th century their traditional way of life essentially broken down as a result of the military draft and other things. And the Jews of Ukraine, or some of them in the late 19th century, build up a kind of a modern Yiddish literature. Shalom Aleikim is basically a now I'm stealing an idea from my colleague Amelia Glazer, but he's taking Gogol and his portraits of the Ukrainian countryside and making them gentler.
