Vivasections and the Brown Dog Affair
Ernest Starling is credited with coining the word Hormone after a series of discoveries involving the function of the pancreas. The Vivasections that led to the Brown Dog affair were on one that was described as, quote, a big brown dog of the terrier type. In December of 1902, Starling conducted a procedure on this dog in which he tied off the dog's Pancreas. This was part of ongoing research into diabetes. And he said that within a couple of days, the dog had recovered from that procedure and was acting normal and free from pain.
