Shostakovich's 7th Symphony: The Leningrad
Shostakovich's 7th Symphony was written during the Siege of Leningrad. 500,000 Russian soldiers and 800,000 to 1 million civilians died in the siege. Cats and dogs were killed for food while reports of cannibalism were rampant. Shostakovich became a volunteer member of the fire brigades as he worked on the symphony.
