The Triumph of Pompey

By 62 BC, Pompey decided that it was time to return home. He wound his way back home at the head of 45,000 men and easily the most popular man in Rome. The kingdoms conquered or allied with during Pompey's campaign literally doubled the amount of money coming into the Roman treasury. That a man like him could dream big, violent, egotistical dreams was a sign of the times. But he did not dream of being sullah and taking over the empire, which made him a staunche defender of the Republic as any existed in those days.
