Tensions and Triumphs in the AME Church

This chapter explores the historical tensions within the Methodist Church regarding race and social justice, especially through the lens of the African Methodist Episcopal (AME) Church. It discusses the conflict between liberal advocates for justice and conservative opposition, as well as the leadership of Richard Allen in establishing the AME denomination. Furthermore, it highlights the church's role in supporting newly freed African Americans, emphasizing their agency, intellect, and the reinterpretation of Christianity within the Black context.
