The Importance of Localization

I share your skepticism about that and I've had a similar experience with you. The broader issue about localization is not the pairing of a random person, but it's got to be the tastemaker at the store level. Just that front of store experience can matter and enormously for discovery. Maybe curation doesn't really work that well because there's someone who has superior insight.
