Tolkien understood what he was doing to be creating a mythological legendarium for Britain in Northern Europe, which he thought he didn't exist. The poet W.H. Auden lent early and vociferous support to Tolkien's work. When it appeared in the middle of the 20th century, nothing like it had been done in a thousand years.
