What's the Role of the Monstrous?
The idea of the monster is like a screen onto which you can project all kinds of fears and anxieties, right? That's the cinematic role of the monster. When we render somebody monstrous, like say demonizing Nancy Pelosi or or whatever, they represent a type like they don't demonize Nancy Pelosi because she's Nancy Pelosi. And so I think that the flip side of the only those people get to be attacked by monsters is that people who are enough like them will never be defined as monstrous. The other sort of rule of the game is that those who look like us if we're the right wing Christian nationalists, that can never be monstrous.
