The Last Controversy About Gnosticism
Gnosticism was pretty strong until the fourth and fifth centuries. After christianity becomes an imperial state religion, gnosticism is used to suppress it. The donatists were another sort of breakaway group that believed church sacraments only valid if performed by clergy faultless and without sin. So you could say they were the most purest about the clergy.
