It was really an issue of format. They could not make Final Fantasy 7 for Metal Gear Solid on the Nintendo 64, which was in a very limited cartridge format. So this was also at a time when CD ROMs were very prevalent,. It wasn't like it was a weird new format that nobody had ever heard of. That's why the Sony decided to say, okay, well, we made we made this whole video game system with CDs, we might as well just release it and call it the PlayStation.
