Warming pans were used in the early to mid 1800s, like 17 and 1800s before we had electric heating. It was a way that you could keep beds warmer in colder climates. The long handle of it stick out so that you can get out of bed and grab the side and pull it out. And then just put more coals in and put it under the bed.
