If Sunak was two points behind Kia Starmer in the polls rather than 20, would he have embarked on this? Because this looks to me like to put it crudely, a shit or bust situation. He's either going down in flames anyway, so why not go down in flames doing the right thing? And if it does the right thing and it commands some popularity with the British people that he is seen to have taken a gamble, he looks much more primarily prime ministerial as a result.
