The Anglican Church and Newton

The Anglican Church was in sympathy with Newton because it had a more tolerant, ecclesiastical structure. There was a strong tradition of Aristotelian scholarship among the clergy as the Anglican Church stressed moderation and spiritual matters. And Locke came from this general tradition in fact, whereas Hobbes, a much more violent background. I didn't mean to emphasize, especially the attitudes of the clergy, but to men, England recognized the greatness of its great men.
