How to Write a Change Log

The idea that somehow GitHub releases is the source of truth for the history of your project just seems really strange to me. Commit messages and change logs are different things and they've got different audiences and you should write different information for different audiences. And I'm just a huge fan of writing as a way of understanding for yourself.
