The Penological Objectives of Capital Punishment
John Avlon: There are actually three legitimate, penological objectives. Two of them involve deterrence; the other is retribution. He says studies show that for every time an execution takes place, 18 murders don't take place. Avlon: It strikes me as completely counterintuitive that death would not be on some rational people's minds when they think about committing a heinous crime.
