The Factor of Perception in Buddhism

In every moment of knowing, there also arises in different combinations an assortment of mental factors or mental qualities. These are the habitual mental tendencies which in meditation we see over and over again. And it's these mental factors which illuminate the whole ethical framework of the Buddhist teachings. That's the basis for the ethical framework, what leads to true happiness, and what leads us to suffering. The Buddha was able to see which mental factors lead to happiness; he called them wholesome. He saw which mental factors led to suffering: he called those unwholesome.
