Christianity teaches us that we were never designed to fulfill our purpose by being within ourselves alone. It is always in relationship. People are looking for this sense of something bigger from within themselves. They instinctively want to anchor their identity in something that is greater than who they even are, and they're looking for it internally as opposed to outside of themselves.
