The Power of Abstract Maps in D&D
The abstract map to me is a really, really powerful and flexible way of doing combat maps that don't take a lot of time. Other games tend not to have this problem because they don't have an expectation of fixed distances like that. Most RPGs that I played that aren't D&D, many of them don't require it. Pathfinder is an obvious exception,. Paizo actually sells tons of different maps and their adventures have the expectation that you're gonna have that map as well.
