CHAPTER

The Cost of Wind and Solar in the United States

Nuclear plants operate at a very high capacity factor, which is the percentage of time that they're actually producing electricity. So if you lose a gigawatt of nuclear power, in many parts of the country, where the capacity factors of wind or solar might be 30% or so, you'd have to build three gigawatts of land or three Gigawatts of solar just to make up the carbon free electricity lost by losing that one plant. And we do not need to be digging holes just to refill them. We are woefully behind in our efforts to decarbonize our electricity system.
