Tranquillizers like mitchell's rest cure were specifically marketed to help make women better adhere to the expectations femininity. One astonishing sirax ad from 19 69 depicts a woman surrounded by cleaning supplies, a broom and mop create the illusion that she's behind bars. The add copy reads, can't set her free, but you can make her feel less anxious.
