The Importance of Courtly Love in the Divine Comedy
Paul mistakenly chose to define Christian freedom which is found in the being of God against Roman freedom and so he uses erotic desire erotic love to mark where Christianity has gone wrong. Dante's experience of meeting Beatrice was greatly enabled by this tradition of courtly love that was flourishing then. In particular it's this understanding of love that enables Dante to realize that when he meets Beatrice he hasn't just met a beautiful woman who might satisfy all his desire.
