Conversions and Inner Conflicts

It's common for people to say that something like a religious conversion is you know someone becoming a new person or a new self and I just think that's wrong. The convert who you know sees the light was someone who lived a completely different life before right so the Buddha is the Buddha right because the Buddha wasn't always the Buddha and enlightenment was found. In order to be a well-formed self I think you're a perfectly well-formedself you're a self who's grappling with this conflict and you know trying to decide can I reconcile it do I just have to live with it if I live with it what kind of compromises do I have to make?
