Oliver cromwell, who ruled the country with an iron fist, died in 16 58 and was replaced by his son, richard. Influential people in england decided that this new ruler, richard cromwell,. was not up to the job, so he contacted the exiled prince charles. Prince charles was invited back and was crowned as charles the second, ruling from 16 60. The country has had a king or queen ever since this period.
