The Boatlift - The Story of the Cubans
In 1980, Miami was in the midst of a transformation from provincial tourist town to what many consider Latin America's financial capital. In 1979, there had been a record number of homicides in Miami-Dade County. The riots happened at the end of a two-week stretch that saw more than 40,000 Cuban refugees arrived from Mario. Between 1960 and 1980, nearly half a million Cubans came to settle in Miami.
