The Moral Obligations of the Human Race

Do we have moral obligations to future generations? Is that something that exists? Or how do we view that? If the question is, do we have a responsibility to live in such a way that future generations will be able to inherit a livable planet then it would say yes. So on the assumption, which is an altogether reasonable one, that the human race is going to continue at least for some time if we simply follow the golden rule, do unto others as you would have others doing to you.
