The Strength of Belief
If you're a real true believer in something, you're going to cling to it a lot longer. Social support that sustains beliefs is the biggest predictor of whether or not clung to this belief. The norms of groups don't have to be cult-like. They can actually be centered on accuracy and reward people who poke holes in bad ideas and disprove them. But when they're not, you get something like the seeker's cult or Enron.
