What Is the Difference Between Offsetting and Removal?
In the world of net zero, if you omit a ton and you pay some one to stop omitting a ton, your ton is still out there warming the planet. And at this stage in the climate crisis, that is not really good enough anymore. We have to actually remove. Carbon removal literally absorbs carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and stores it. That might be something like tree planting, which does it en biologically through the biosphere. Or the best of canonical examples probably direct air capture, which literally has fans that absorb carbon dioxide fromthe atmosphere and then buries it underground in geologic sequestration.
