Putin founded the Wagner Group in 2014, which at its peak had about 50,000 mercenary recruits. The US and other allies have said that the Wagner mercenaries operate with Putin's knowledge because they're not official Russian military. Progosion was running a troll farm that the US has said interfered and meddled with the 2016 presidential election.
Moscow is quiet again after an armed insurrection in Russia over the weekend ended as quickly as it began. But the uprising has left President Vladimir Putin weakened in the eyes of many Kremlin watchers, including US and European officials.
