I think I was very much trying to tell the truth and to complicate this adoption narrative that so many times in our culture is presented as something very simple and straightforward, but of course the reality is far more complex. With the second book, it's just an entirely different sort of project. It's not that my identity isn't relevant, but it's taking on ... broader issues like grief and illness and elder care. And then even though I very much did not want to write about the pandemic, the pandemic comes into this book a bit because that is when I lost my mom.
