Jefferson tried to grow wine in what would become the colony of Virginia. The vines they planted at first here were not Vitus Venepharete, but native grapes. Besides Phyloxera, you would have had to deal with black rot and powdery mildew. They eventually brought vitis vinifera over because these wines that they were making weren't good.
