The Importance of Hard Work and Merit in Economics
Graham Culbertson: I think people should not have to work so hard and merit shouldn't count for so much. In an oligarchy, there's a huge gap between rich and poor because if you fall below the threshold of being one of the elite, then you're screwed. The stakes are too high and that makes people paranoid and anxious and willing to hold others down in order to maintain this very precarious position. All the oligarchy's lives everyone who are part of the elite have this constant anxiety about what will happen next.
