The universe is expanding at a velocity that's faster than it used to be. We can measure this by looking in our neighborhood and seeing how fast things are moving away from us. Inflation and the big bang also due to dark energy, but we don't know if they're connected. There are some theories of inflation that try to connect dark energy with inflation.
