The History of Maryland and Virginia

The Maryland government added more ships and staff in 1870 following a number of rather unflattering articles about how many bodies had been washing up on the shore. Between 1882 and 1885, William Evelyn Cameron personally led a series of anti-pyrite attacks up the Chesapeake through Maryland to the mouth of the Rappahannock River. In March of 1884, Virginia enacted a bill that established a board on the Chesapeake and its tributaries, which created and funded an actual naval force to protect Virginia's oyster interests. And by the spring of 1894, there was really nothing left for them to do but negotiate with each other.
