The Current Hydrogen Problem
About 87 million metric tons of hydrogen were already produced and used in the global economy in 2020. About 47% of the global hydrogen production currently comes from treating natural gas, 27% from coal, another 22% from oil. Only about 1% of our current hydrogen production is green in the strict sense that it's hydrogen produced by electrolysis and by the use of green electricity. The promise of hydrogen is that there are other things we can do with it.
