The Legend of Mithridates

Mithridates was a king in the 6th century. The story goes that he built up his immunity to poison by regularly swallowing small doses of different poisons. He would take lots of different poisons with walnuts and figs all ground together. And then he would add a grain of salt to make the mixture more palatable or easier to swallow. It's from there that the idiom cracked into our language.
