Antidepressant Drug Discovery - The Decision Theory Says Quality Beats Quantity

Every single new class of antidepressant medication has been discovered by serendipitous observations in people right now. So many drugs come about not from this a priori reasoning about the molecular function of a protein but just physicians finding that hey drug x or indication y also works for indication z. The only decision tool that's actually really proven valid has been people themselves with depression so I think it points towards an idea that quality beats quantity and one should maybe throw more capital at therapeutic opportunities where there's an opportunity to do decent experimental medicine tests in people.
