The Importance of the Heart

In the first century, there was an understanding that impurity is what comes out of a body. To eat with unwashed hands does not defile anyone. What comes out of the mouth proceeds from the heart. We'll pick this up in Jeremiah 31 when God will write his law on the hearts of his people and Jesus alludes to that prophecy at the Last Supper.
