Introduction
Jim McDonald grew up in Glasgow and worked as a Transmission and Distribution Engineer for the South of Scotland Electricity Board. He joined Strathclyde University in 1984 and has been there ever since, doing pioneering research into how large power networks actually work. Achieving net zero CO2 emissions will need some clever electrical engineering and a radical overhaul of our national grid.
