Greg Boington and the Japanese
The Japanese did indeed know who Greg Boington was. They would get on the friggin radio and dare him to come down and fly through anti-aircraft fire, which he'd respond by saying "come up and fight you sons of bitches" So it was like a back and forth between two angry neighbors who didn't like one another. Well, this one particular day, the Japanese decided to respond to the verbal assault. They did indeed tangle with the black sheep over 20 enemy aircraft were shot down on October 17, 1943 without a single loss to VMF 214.
