The History of Franco's Dilemma
Franco was a sovereign dictator, but that does not imply his rule was arbitrary or despotic. He had very definite and very simple core principles, but beyond those he was politically flexible. It is fairly evident that Franco did not mind a longer war. As more dellos emphasizes, this enabled him to permanently repress the left by killing his opponents and scaring the rest into final submission.
